A Mother’s Reflection

By Tracey Hamilton

I sit and contemplate, I dream and I celebrate

A gorgeous boy, a beautiful woman

A future unbound

The journey has been arduous with sadness and pain

But also an excitement that I cannot explain

There has been loss and grieving, anger and blame

There has been courage and resilience, no two days the same

Fighting to find answers, an identity, a name

A never-ending tug-o-war to win the game

There have been challenges and triumphs at every stop and every turn

And the realisation dawning the destination’s unknown,

Family and friends scared and confused

Not knowing where to turn or what to do

Betrayed by nature, bearing the blame

Nothing ever again, the same

Hopes and dreams taken away

Angry at the world and what it has to say

Doubts about decisions and wanting to reject

But love winning out, and the choice to accept

From the tears and hesitation

To strength and determination

Nervous and searching for a place in society

Finding a way through the haze and anxiety

The goal post moving as each milestone’s achieved

And the destination changing as new plans are conceived

The endless journey to finding one’s true self

Begins with the question and pursuing with stealth

A soul restored, invigorated, determined

Supported by a family steadfast and unburdened

A mother blessed, honoured and proud,

To have such a beautiful gift allowed

A chance to conquer, to live and be true

As only those with courage can do

Limited only by the imagination

Moving forward from a firm foundation

Together we stand, always for all time

The world awaits, the new age dawns

The dream, the reality, the infinite possibilities
