Are You A Boy?
By Jo Mills
Are you a boy?
I’m 5
I love my blue sailboat shirt that’s nearly worn through. I play with cars & trains.
I don’t understand the question.
Are boys & girls different?
Are you a boy?
I’m 7
I want to grow up to jump motorbikes, like my favourite toy Evil Kenevil, or dance on roofs like Bert
in Mary Poppins.
I don’t understand the question.
Do you need to be a boy to grow up to be Bert?
Are you a boy?
I’m 9
I go as a cowboy to my friends dress up Birthday party. I looked just like the ones of tv.
I understand the question now.
I just don’t understand why another kid said I can’t be a cowboy.
Do you think you’re a boy?
I’m 12
I love camping by the river & going fishing. I want to see my team win the grand final.
I contemplate the question.
I wonder why people need to ask it.
Why aren’t I a boy?
I’m 16
I’m frustrated when she thinks he’s cute when I pick flowers to give to her on her birthday.
I understand the question now.
I just don’t have an answer.
Are you a guy?
I’m 24
I’m simply using a public bathroom. I want to mind my own business, fly under the radar, not be
noticed.
I understand the question.
Why must I justify myself to strangers?
Are you transitioning to male?
I’m 38
I don’t identify as male but I have never identified as female.
I understand why someone asks the question.
I don’t understand why I have to make a choice.
Should I refer to you as She or He?
I’m 49
I have taken courageous steps to reduce my dysphoria.
I have done this for myself, not to fit into other people’s boxes.
I understand why society wants to ask these questions.
I don’t need them.
I’m just me.
